Too often with EAL learners they are passive learners in the mainstream classroom. We should be encouraging them to be active listeners as much as possible. This classroom strategy is a good active listening task for them. Here is how it works:
When you are about to deliver a teacher led session of learning content, prepare a sheet with words or phrases for them to listen out for and circle. It is also a good idea to include words that you are not going to use so as not to make it too easy. I would focus on words that are related to the content that you are delivering, for example, subject / topic specific words or phrases.
This could be differentiated to the language proficiency of your learners. For instance for EAL learners that are New to English (DfE Code A) or Early Acquisition (DfE Code B) you could provide less words or phrases to listen out for than those learners that are more proficient.
