True / false statements is a good strategy to use with learners that are new to English. Rather than asking them to write answers they could show their understanding by answering true / false statements.
Additional scaffolding could include underlining the sentence or part of the text where learners can locate the answer.
Also, it is a good idea to include some inference as this is a good skill for EAL learners to develop.
