Turn and Talk

Turn and talk is a great strategy to promote active listening for your EAL learners. Here is how it works:

After hearing the teacher give a piece of content, learners turn to their partner and tell them what they heard the teacher speak about.  The partner also says what they heard the teacher say.

They then turn to another pair in the classroom, either sitting on their table or sitting behind them and they tell the pair what their partner has just told them.

The other pair repeat this process.

In this way, learners get to hear what the teacher has said from multiple places and they can also clarify any misunderstandings that they might have.

It is also a good way for the teacher to check understanding of the content they have delivered.
