EAL CPD

As the number of users of English as an Additional Language (EAL) continues to rise in England’s schools, there are a number of different ways you can enhance your knowledge and understanding of EAL.

This post will explore the different ways schools can support staff in enhancing their practice to support learners of EAL. Click on the links and you will be taken to the relevant page.

NALDIC

The National Association for Language Development in the Curriculum is a charitable organisation aiming to support learners of EAL.

NALDIC RIGs Their RIGs or regional interest groups usually convene 3 times per year and are free to join. These a great places to enhance EAL practice and network.

The NALDIC EAL Conference Once a year, NALDIC convene a conference for EAL. Each years title is different and explores different areas of EAL. A range of experts from different fields including schools, colleges, universities and private organisations deliver key note speeches and workshops. Prices vary according to whether you are a member of NALDIC or not.

Join NALDIC – It is well worth joining. You get a copy of their fabulous print journal, access to exclusive member content and opportunities to attend other training events. You can choose the type of membership you want including school wide membership at £100, individual membership at £40 and for ITE students it is FREE!

The Bell Foundation

The Bell Foundation has a range of different ways to enhance EAL practice:

Webinars You can book to watch upcoming webinars or explore webinars that have already taken place. A range of different topics are available including: assessment, writing, reading, the role of an EAL Coordinator and many more. Their YouTube channel has a wealth of different videos.

Courses They also have courses. Some free and some which you have to pay for. Topics include leading a whole school EAL strategy, assessing EAL and supporting new arrivals.

Great Ideas – Their great ideas page has a range of short videos to enhance EAL practice. Topics include barrier games, collaborative activities, dictogloss, jigsaw activities and questioning strategies and many more.

The EAL Academy

The EAL Academy look to support schools in improving provision for learners of EAL.

The offer training and consultancy.

Online EAL courses which include topics such as EAL and SEND, EAL beginners in the mainstream, EAL teaching assistants and many more.

They also have an Extended EAL Online course lasting 6 months.

Hampshire EMTAS

Hampshire EMTAS have a range of different courses with topics including new arrivals training, supporting EAL, more advanced learners of EAL and many more.

TWINKL Podcasts

Talking their language a range of podcasts from experts in the field of EAL. Topics include pre teaching vocabulary, transition, scaffolding, refugee education and many more.

Better Bilingual

Better Bilingual offers a range of CPD opportunities and more information can be found by clicking this link. They run CPD for teachers of New to English learners, an EAL Champions CPD program, and can support schools with EAL funding and much much more.

Inclusion Hub

Of course a range of universities offer various programmes that support EAL CPD. It is best to research different universities and look at the programs they have on offer.
